Leee Black Childers

Leee Black Childers (Filipino, b.1998)

"I don’t think photography will ever lose its magic. I love doing it. That’s it. Not that photography was magic, but I love doing it. You’re right [to say] that I was lucky.  My camera was always pointing very privately at some very famous people but that was just my luck."

Leee Black Childers didn’t just photograph his subjects, he was managing many of them. Part of Warhol’s Factory, he brought the Warhol play ‘Pork’ to London and met David Bowie for whom he helped develop his Ziggy Stardust persona, then went on to be tour manager of Iggy Pop and then managed the Heartbreakers who he brought to London on the Anarchy Tour with the Sex Pistols. Other bands he managed included Levi and The Rockats the successful punk rockabilly band with Smutty Smith, who has helped with the development of this exhibition. A significant figure in the music business in the 1970’s, Leee always had his camera at hand. Sadly, he passed away in 2014 and left many negatives that had never been seen until this exhibition
