About the Artist

From the New York subway system to an international painting practice.

Born in Queens, New York, Chris “DAZE” Ellis emerged from the generation of artists who transformed New York’s subway system into one of the most influential visual movements of the late twentieth century.

His work combines the immediacy of graffiti with a distinctly painterly approach, bringing together spray paint, acrylic, gestural mark making and an enduring fascination with the architecture and atmosphere of the city.

Across more than four decades of practice, DAZE has developed a visual language rooted in movement, memory and urban experience, taking the energy of the street into galleries, institutions and public projects internationally.

Corner Seat

A portrait of movement, memory and the New York subway.

At the centre of the exhibition was Corner Seat, a work capturing the atmosphere of travelling through the interiors of New York’s subway system through DAZE’s distinctive visual language.

Drawing on themes developed in his South Bronx studio, the image combines saturated colour, layered brushwork and shifting gradients with the familiar geometry of the subway carriage.

The limited edition was produced in collaboration with Dark Green Studios, retaining the depth and energy of the original work while extending the project into a collectible edition.
