About the Artist

A life shaped by protest, imprisonment, transformation and painting.

Born in Cahors, France, in 1951, Didier Chamizo developed an artistic practice inseparable from a life marked by political activism, personal upheaval and radical change.

His early years coincided with a period of profound political and cultural transformation in France. Chamizo became involved in the May 1968 protests and later participated in anti nuclear demonstrations and campaigns connected to women’s rights.

His activism and subsequent involvement in criminal activity eventually led to imprisonment. It was during this period that painting became an increasingly important part of his life, allowing Chamizo to transform lived experience, anger and political conviction into a distinctive artistic language.

Over time, his work developed into a fusion of figurative painting, text, colour and visual fragmentation, creating portraits that address politics, consumerism, identity and the contradictions of contemporary society.

Rebel Soul

Nineteen portraits and one extraordinary painted machine.

Rebel Soul brought together 19 figurative portraits alongside a custom Harley Davidson painted by Chamizo specifically as part of the exhibition presentation.

Across the works, faces and figures emerge through dense layers of colour, lettering and graphic form. The paintings reflect Chamizo’s interest in what he describes through his distinctive approach to lettric abstraction figuration, in which language and image occupy the same pictorial space.

The exhibition explored recurring themes within his practice including rebellion, redemption, social conflict and personal identity, connecting these ideas directly to the artist’s own unconventional history.

Curatorial Context

An artist whose biography and practice cannot easily be separated.

Chamizo’s work occupies an unusual position between biography, political commentary and contemporary painting. His images are informed not simply by observation, but by experiences that have repeatedly placed him in direct confrontation with social and political structures.

For D’Stassi Art, the exhibition presented an opportunity to introduce a singular European practice to a UK audience while continuing the gallery’s interest in artists whose personal histories are deeply embedded within their visual language.

Rebel Soul positioned the work not as an illustration of Chamizo’s biography, but as the continuing product of it: energetic, confrontational and rooted in the possibility of transformation.
