About Didier Chamizo:

Didier Chamizo’s life and art are intrinsically linked in a narrative that speaks to the profound impact of personal struggle, political activism, and artistic redemption. Born into poverty in Cahors, France, on 15th October 1951, Chamizo's life has been defined by rebellion, activism, and artistic creation. His story is filled with extremes: political protest, imprisonment, and even a dramatic motorcycle accident in 1982 that almost claimed his life. Through these tumultuous experiences, Chamizo channeled his pain, activism, and resilience into his art, producing visceral and emotional works that have earned him a reputation as one of France’s most exciting and unconventional contemporary artists.

Chamizo’s journey is nothing short of cinematic: from his involvement in the May 1968 protests in France, to his participation in anti-nuclear demonstrations, and advocacy for women's rights. His commitment to activism led him to the arms trade and subsequent incarceration, where he began to refine his artistic practice, eventually producing artworks from his prison cell that sold out in exhibitions. His early works were shaped by protest and hardship, and his later pieces reflect the complexities of the human condition and the deep emotional truths of his journey.

His art is a testament to the power of transformation: the same anger, frustration, and passion that once drove him to protest are now channeled into vivid portraits that speak to society’s most pressing issues, from consumerism to political corruption. Through his distinctive lettric abstraction-figuration style, Chamizo creates bold, figurative portraits that confront the viewer with their rawness, beauty, and complexity. His work serves as a window into the struggles and triumphs of his life, while also critiquing the world around him.

Chamizo’s incredible talent did not go unnoticed. His work has earned the admiration of prominent art world figures, including Alain Dominique Perrin (Founder of the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art), French singer Hugues Aufray, rapper JoeyStarr, and actress Marisa Berenson. His life and work even caught the attention of François Mitterrand, the President of France, who granted him a pardon after his conviction. His artworks have since been collected by some of the most discerning collectors and institutions around the world.

Rebel Soul: The Exhibition

Didier Chamizo’s Rebel Soul exhibition at D’Stassi Art will feature 19 vivid figurative portraits alongside a custom Harley Davidson hand-painted by the artist himself. These works offer an exploration of the tumultuous and ever-evolving journey that Chamizo has experienced, using his art to confront societal issues, personal identity, and the complexities of the human condition. Drawing inspiration from lettrism, a unique alternative to graffiti and tag art, Chamizo’s pieces are infused with a raw, untamed expression that speaks to the heart of political and personal rebellion.

Each portrait captures a sense of urgency and emotion, reflecting not only the artist’s personal experiences but also the broader societal struggles he’s witnessed. Chamizo’s work pushes boundaries, inviting viewers to engage with powerful themes of activism, redemption, and self-exploration.

Chamizo’s work is a rare blend of real-life grit and artistic expression, making this exhibition an unmissable event. For those who are passionate about social justice, the human condition, and raw artistic talent, Rebel Soul is a powerful reminder of art's ability to inspire, challenge, and transform.

Didier Chamizo on his Exhibition:

“I am thrilled to announce my debut exhibition at D’Stassi Art, a milestone in my journey as an artist. This opportunity has been made possible through a serendipitous encounter with Alex Kolster, founder of Henrik Alexander, whose instant connection and shared vision led us to this moment. Despite a tumultuous life marked by near-death experiences, brushes with crime, and time spent in prison, I've been fortunate to pursue my dreams freely. Yet, showcasing my work in the UK feels like one of those special bucket list moments I never dared to expect. As a lifelong fan of British rock ‘n’ roll, from The Rolling Stones and The Clash to The Beatles, this feels like a full-circle moment. I am immensely grateful to Alex Kolster, Ed Sanders, and Mike Howes for their passion and dedication in organizing this show. Their enthusiasm is truly inspiring, and I cannot wait to share my art with the people of the United Kingdom.”

A Rebel’s Journey:

Chamizo's rebellious spirit began early in life when he left school at the age of 13 to pursue a career as a locksmith apprentice. However, his true passion for art was ignited through evening classes, and he quickly became involved in the political activism of the May 1968 protests. His defiant stance against societal norms led him into the arms trade and eventually to imprisonment. It was during his time behind bars that his artistic voice truly emerged.

Chamizo’s art took on a new dimension as he used his experiences of imprisonment, rebellion, and personal anguish to create a body of work that would later earn him recognition as an authentic and extraordinary artist. His artwork was so compelling that it caught the attention of major art world figures, including Alain Dominique Perrin and others who helped to bring his art to the public.

A Rare Artist in the Spotlight

Despite his immense success, Didier Chamizo remains a figure of mystery. He is known for shunning the public spotlight, with interviews and public appearances being rare. His reclusiveness has only added to the mystique surrounding him, fueling speculation about the man behind the masterpieces. His unique blend of personal experience and artistic expression makes him one of the most intriguing and collectable artists of his time.

Ed Sanders & Michael Howes, Founders of D’Stassi Art, Comment:

“Every once in a while, things seem to line up extraordinarily. Having known Alex Kolster for most of my life, for him to bring Didier and his utterly incredible story to our attention couldn’t be more perfect. Michael and I started working in art to primarily act as storytellers through our passion for particular artists and their fascinating life stories. Didier is no exception. His artwork is awe-inspiring, political, thought-provoking, and still cool and fun. I consider it a privilege to host his UK debut and to have the man himself over to the UK to experience how D’Stassi Art puts on a show.”
