The exhibition featured artists who move fluidly between the street and the studio, the underground and the international stage.

Lady Pink, a pioneering figure in graffiti and one of the first women to establish herself within a historically male dominated scene, appeared alongside Malik Roberts, whose paintings examine image, identity and media culture.

Trevor Andrew, widely known through his GucciGhost project, brought his irreverent visual language to the exhibition, while Peter Opheim’s vivid and sculptural paintings pushed the boundaries of contemporary figuration.

Anthony Rondinone, Yok, Rose Madone and Adam Handler expanded the dialogue further, bringing together approaches spanning street art, abstraction, narrative painting and contemporary figurative practice.

Where popular culture, fine art and mass media collide.

Special appearances by internationally recognised artists including Madsaki, Slawn and Takashi Murakami extended the exhibition’s conversation into the intersections between popular culture, fine art and mass media.

Their inclusion reinforced the exhibition’s central idea: that surface is never simply decorative. It can carry cultural references, identity, humour, history and conflict, while shaping the way an audience first encounters an artwork.

Surface Tension was conceived not as a single narrative, but as a space in which contrasting practices could sit in conversation with one another.

Each work asserted itself differently. Some were playful and immediate, others more personal or psychologically charged, yet together they reflected the vitality of contemporary art as a space where boundaries continue to blur and new meanings emerge.

By placing emerging voices alongside established names, the exhibition considered the continuing influence of street culture and the ways its energy has moved far beyond its original context into the broader landscape of contemporary art.
