A LOOK BACK AT 'SUPERSONIC JELLY BABIES'

A LOOK BACK AT 'SUPERSONIC JELLY BABIES'

April was an exciting month at D’Stassi Art!  The London flagship gallery unveiled the newly renovated space perfectly in line with the new exhibition from David King Reuben.  Slick floors and fresh white walls were the perfect backdrop to King’s colourful, glossy and chaotic pieces. Holding true to the D’Stassi ethos, the collector's lounge now boasts a beautifully crafted wooden bar fully equipped with any provision a person’s heart could desire.

Exhibiting over 150 works, King used the new gallery space to create a universe of his own. Hundreds of unique and charisma filled Jelly Babies encompass you as you enter the gallery space – an enveloping and sensory overload! The hallway between the bar and the larger gallery was transformed by the artist into a rainbow tunnel – transporting you back into King’s candy-coated 90’s pop culture paradise.

Studio aftermath

On first glance, the colours may act as a distraction from the unnerving elements of the work but we are soon overtaken by the beauty and complexity of each of these exquisite and masterfully crafted works. The sticky surfaces juxtaposed against the brutality of the literal destruction embedded in the work creates a true sense of unease reminiscent of the late 90’s/early 2000s rave culture. The sick and the sweet.

The opening event, held on the 8th of April, brought out record breaking numbers of visitors and collectors alike. The vibe was set by the amazing DJ de jour - Bas Ibellini whose innovative musical interludes elevated the viewing and the vibing all night long.

As always, D’Stassi hosted a beautiful collectors' dinner the evening before for the artist and an intimate few. A gorgeous three-course meal with signature cocktails – named and flavoured to integrate beautifully with King’s titles and aesthetic (The Super Silver Haze – a pineapple and patron based cocktail was surely the hit of the evening!)

All in all, this exhibition was a triumph, showing great things yet to come from both the artist and the gallery.

The show culminated in an intimate screening and artist talk where audiences were moved by David’ passionate explanations of the motivation behind his work.

D’Stassi is promising a very exciting program for the rest of 2022 – keep your eyes peeled for updates coming soon!
