May was a massive month for D’Stassi Art. It saw our sold out private view of Angel ‘LA II’ Ortiz exhibition close with the launch of his first print in over a decade. The launch included 10 hand-embellished editions, each one uniquely created by Angel in his studio in New York. The launch was a resounding success and sold out over the weekend it launched.
Closing out the month, D’Stassi Art opened its doors to Wide-eyed, an ultra-contemporary exhibition curated by friend of the gallery Heather Bell.
The show featured over 50 works from 15 international artists - Heather Bell, Isabel Cavenecia, Ikeda Moody Golding, Rory Hayatgheybi, Cameron Hoskins, Jimmy Hyde, Danny Ische - Knoblauch, Harry Hugo Little, Jasmine Nelson, Malachy O’Neill, Patrick Quinn, Sage Schachter, Christian Thomsen, Sharada Tolton and Joe Weird.
The show was an exploration of youth culture, questioning the ephemeral nature of coolness in contemporary society. This was coupled with an imagery of occultism in which Heather describes as “walking through a minefield of teen angst and fairy dust.” The works themselves are a mix of abstract expressionism and faux naif, drawing on childlike imagery executed in expert precision.
The launch night also saw the unveiling of a new work created by D’Stassi Art veteran David King Reuben. The larger than life work, titled Meditations No. 1, is the first in a new series produced by the artist.
Despite Meditations No. 1 being a canvas work, David has chosen to frame the work in a way that is reminiscent to the way it was pinned whilst creating it.
Wide-Eyed is open to view at D’Stassi Art Gallery until June 24th.

Angel ‘LA II’ Ortiz has had the exhibition Ode to New York open at Chase Contemporary Gallery in New York on May 18th. The immersive experience features 30 new canvas works that feature Ortiz’s vibrant and geometric style. The show features a unique body of work that exemplifies the artist’s love and admiration for the city he is proud to call home.

Adam Handler has released a new limited edition Smush me Ghost sculpture! The works are cast marble and come in a specially printed box and Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
Anthony Rondinone
Anthony Rondinone has released the first episode of his new Podcast Ready, Go! The podcast opens up a dialogue of the process in creating art. The first episode featured D’Stassi artist Adam Handler.

David King Reuben
Daivd King Reuben was commissioned by Cultured Magazine to create a portfolio of looks from their Spring/Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection with nothing by A.I. image generators.
The spread was completely generated by A.I. including the models, sets and lighting, except for the clothes which spotlight the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection.
This is an extension of David’s recent practice in creating A.I. generated art which he has been curating on his Instagram throughout this year.

Sothebys and Christie's modern / contemporary / now auctions in New York.
The spring auction at Sothebys and Christie's New York took place in May and are amongst the most anticipated sales in the art market calendar. The 21st Century sale at Christie’s took place May 15th and brought in $98.9 million.
Notable sales include Jean Michel-Basquiats’ El Gran Espectaculo (The Nile) which sold for $67.1million, Cecily Browns Untitled (The Beautiful and the Damned) which hammered down for $6.7 million and Yayoi Kuasma’s Pumpkin which sold for $4.9 million.
This saw Basquiat reach his fourth highest auction result ever and demonstrates the saying power that his work holds in the market and for collectors.

Soethby’s saw similar headline results on the 19th May at their double headliner The Now and contemporary art auctions with 10 artists making new records. The combined auctions saw the night close at $204.6 million, of which $37.1 million was realised in The Now sale. A Louise Bourgeois sculpture, Spider, saw the top result selling for $32.8 million. Following this was another Basquiat work, Now’s the Time, a jumbo vinyl record selling at $28.6 million.
Featured Artist.Ikeda Moody Golding - Secret Garden
Ikeda Moody Golding is one of the artists featured in our current group show Wide Eyed. Her works transport viewers to a dreamlike world beyond the tangible, exploring the liminal space between reality and imagination. The use of airbrush with acrylic in her works produces subtle and seamless colour blends that give the artwork an abstract, immaterial, or ephemeral quality.
