David King Reubens New Exhibition for Freize London

Ensconced in the world of Jewish Radicalism, the passing of the artist’s late beloved grandmother, affectionately nicknamed 'Nana’, marked a profound shift in his life. As a young boy ‘Nana’ was the artist’s only hope, the one person who believed he could break free from their ultra-orthodox community and forge his own path. Just as the artist began to rebel and stray from traditions, despite having been raised to believe a secular life was a sinful life, the sudden death of ‘Nana’ threw everything into relief. Walking through the streets of North West London, surrounded by mourners, alone among family, sole among believers, the young artist was faced with a dual crisis.

Powered by the psychological stress of the mind’s deeply-rooted mystic superstitions, the artist turned his trauma inwards, blaming himself and his sins for his grandmother’s untimely death. His grandmother’s passing became a symbol, not just for the grief of a loved one lost, but of the deep shame, guilt, and fear of his upbringing. His last image of ‘Nana’, her lifeless body lying under a white sheet, would forever haunt him. In order to express these fears he turned to art, thus beginning his lifelong creative journey.

David King Reubens’ latest exhibition WHERE ARE YOU NANA?, coinciding with 20 years since the passing of his grandmother, is an exploration of grief, fear and the symbiosis between rationalism and mysticism that beguiles the human brain. Reuben’s multimedia exhibition, showcased in the historic Heal’s Building on Tottenham Court Road, uses interviews, collected items, photographs, in addition to his paintings, to further examine his relationship with Judaism, his family and his art. Reuben’s practice has been featured in multiple highly acclaimed international exhibitions and art fairs, including the Frieze Art Fair and Miami Art Basel.
