D’Stassi Art is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated solo exhibition of Malik Roberts, the Brooklyn-born-and-based painter and mixed-media artist, in his UK debut. The exhibition, titled "The Double Up", will showcase a collection of brand-new works, running from September 13th to October 25th, 2024, at our Hoxton gallery in London.

The Double Up: An Exploration of Identity and the Mask

In this exhibition, Malik Roberts dives deep into the concept of duality and the masks that people wear—both literally and metaphorically. The title, "The Double Up", speaks to the dual nature of identity: the outer façade that we present to the world and the inner truths we may wish to conceal. Through his distinctive mixed-media style, Roberts uses powerful imagery to explore this paradox, focusing on symbols and motifs that speak directly to Black culture and its complex relationship with the masks society often imposes.

The use of the balaclava—a symbol that can evoke feelings of both protection and aggression—serves as a focal point for Roberts’ exploration of identity. Drawing on personal and cultural experiences, Roberts uses the balaclava as a metaphor for how individuals navigate the tension between their public and private selves, especially in a world that often misinterprets or labels people based on their appearance.

A Rich Artistic Practice Rooted in Personal and Collective Narrative

Roberts’ work is known for its striking prismatic colors and bold use of line, drawing from both historical and contemporary influences. His works often feature fractured faces, angular forms, and vibrant color palettes that convey a sense of internal struggle, resilience, and defiance. The layered textures and evocative compositions allow viewers to experience the complexity of Black identity, examining the intersections of race, history, and culture.

While drawing from the past, Roberts' art also projects into the future. His signature Cubist-Prismatic style—a dynamic fusion of fragmented shapes and bold, saturated hues—transcends traditional portraiture, infusing the works with a sense of movement and energy. His work urges viewers to engage with the artwork on an emotional level, inviting them to explore the narratives of the subjects within, and perhaps even reflect on their own identities and experiences.

A Global Artistic Presence

Malik Roberts’ work has been widely recognized in the art world and beyond. His pieces have been collected by renowned individuals including actors Adrien Brody and Slick Woods, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Vatican. He has exhibited in major cities across the United States, including New York, Miami, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., and his public murals have adorned notable locations such as Kings County Hospital Center, First Street Green Art Park, and the Standard Hotel.

With collaborations with high-profile brands such as Nike, Adidas, and American Express, Roberts continues to carve a path that bridges the worlds of fine art, street culture, and social activism. His ability to engage with contemporary issues through his distinctive artistic lens makes him one of the most compelling voices in modern art.
