Lady Pink: A Queen of the Subways Comes Full Circle at MoMA PS1

We’re proud to spotlight Lady Pink, a trailblazing icon of New York’s graffiti movement, as she takes center stage at MoMA PS1 with a new site-specific mural and a renewed institutional spotlight.

In a powerful full-circle moment, Lady Pink—born Sandra Fabara—returns to MoMA PS1, where she first exhibited over 40 years ago in the now-legendary New York/New Wave exhibition of 1981. At the time, she was just 17, already making her mark on subway trains and the city's streets as one of the few prominent women in graffiti.

Her new mural, Foundations, covers the Jackson Avenue facade of the museum with a sprawling, surreal composition. Layers of brick walls, soaring cityscapes, and symbols of underground culture intertwine with deeply personal references, such as the names of fellow artists and a subtle homage to 5Pointz—Queens’ lost mecca of graffiti.

The work is the first in MoMA PS1’s new annual series of facade murals, cementing Lady Pink’s legacy as a key figure in the transition of graffiti from the streets to the institution. As curator Ruba Katrib notes, the project honors the “generations of artists that laid the groundwork for street art’s cultural impact.”

For those of us who have followed her journey—from subway trains to major museums—the mural is a reminder of Lady Pink’s unmatched ability to bridge the personal and political, the rebellious and the refined. It’s a visual celebration of survival, memory, and the transformative power of art.

With Lady Pink’s upcoming solo show opening at our gallery this July, we’re thrilled to bring her dynamic voice and timeless vision to London audiences.
