D'STASSI EDITIONS: AL DIAZ

D'STASSI EDITIONS: AL DIAZ

The street art of 80s’ New York is of particular interest to art lovers, a period which catapulted talents such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Richard Hambleton into the heart of pop culture. Distassi Art is proud to present a limited run of editions from 80’s street art pioneer Al Diaz; half of SAMO©, alongside Basquiat, and a seminal creator in his own right. Currently, he is working on his WET PAINT series; slicing out individual letters and then reassembling them to form socially-charged messages. Always tinged with wit and an irreverent sense of humour, Diaz’s art is thought-provoking and amusing in equal measure.

In the last few years Diaz’ stock has risen exponentially; whilst he was already a respected name in the minds of street art fans, he is now gaining mainstream momentum. There is significant demand for SAMO© and WET PAINT works; as outlined by the numerous galleries that have exhibited various works by Diaz across New York. An exciting live collaboration between Diaz and UK based artist Schoony took place in Manhattan at ‘NYC via LDN’, hosted by Distassi Art and Contra Galleries. A SAMO© tag was added to Schoony’s ‘Boy Soldier’, alongside WET PAINT lettering to create a unique one of one work.

With a career that spans five decades, the first generation NYC subway graffiti artist is bringing his poignant works to London. Distassi Art is proud to announce two limited edition prints, marking Diaz’s debut transatlantic partnership. ‘Tolerate Civilization’ sees the New Yorker explore notions of society, with various historical references. ‘Because War is just a 3 Letter Word’ sets military imagery against blooming flowers. Both pieces contain WET PAINT lettering and SAMO© tags, resulting in a unique set of works that encapsulate Diaz’s unique artistic path. Set at £425 and £600 respectively, the prints are available via Distassi Art’s Spotlight portal; sold exclusively through the London based dealer.
