WIDEWALLS - SUPERSONIC JELLY BABIES COMING TO D'STASSI ART

Widewalls - 19 March 2022

David King Reuben employs techniques of painting, ceramics, destruction, and repair to create his latest series of one-of-a-kind works entitled Supersonic Jelly Babies.

For the latest series of works, David King Reuben draws inspiration from his early childhood. The visual aesthetic of his new Supersonic Jelly Babies series mimics the sensory joys of childhood toys, from huge, wide, innocent eyes, to glossy plastics resembling candy-colored cuteness. The artist uses an intuitive and process-oriented method to produce vibrant pieces, which offer windows to our memory and psyche.

Depending on the piece, the process begins with painting on stretched canvas, or by forming and firing ceramic elements, and adding them to the painted canvas. Then the art piece gets destroyed with fists, hammers, blowtorches, and guns. The final step of repair, creates new pieces out of the fragmented remains. Every single work in the series contains layers of powerful emotions and experiences that encompass the joys and tragedies that mark a life well-lived. David King Reuben: Supersonic Jelly Babies solo show will be on view from April 8 till May 20, 2022, at D’Stassi Art in London.
