A LOOK BACK AT 'THE DOUBLE UP' BY MALIK ROBERTS

A LOOK BACK AT 'THE DOUBLE UP' BY MALIK ROBERTS

On September 13th, D’Stassi Art opened its doors to a show half a decade in the making Malik Roberts’ UK Solo Debut ‘The Double Up’. The exhibition saw Malik’s creation of 18 canvas and paper works exclusively for the gallery, with 50% sold prior to the opening launch.

Michael, D’Stassi Co-Founder, initially spotted Malik’s works for himself and began collecting. It was clear early on that a UK show would be a great collaboration and so he suggested ‘D’Stassi 2024?’.

Malik’s artworks are dark, raw and textured – drawing from art history and Black culture with beautiful shades of reds, yellows and blues layered on black canvases in a result that can be described as a Cubist-Prismatic art hybrid. His technique and style is comparable to Francis Bacon, Caravaggio and Basquiat. Malik grew up in the NYC art scene and forms part of a really exciting resurgence of born and bred talent – his work has now been seen across the world, he’s collab-ed with both Nike and Adidas, and he’s presented his piece “Crucifixion of a Black Man” to the Pope, which now sits in the permanent art collection of the Vatican – and the D’Stassi show ‘The Double Up’ is his first solo moment here in Europe.
