Kai Ohlsen

Kai Ohlsen (British b. 1994 )

Born in 1994, Kai Ohlsen is a British contemporary artist known professionally as ‘KOHLSEN’. Growing up in Bath, UK with his mother and four brothers, he developed a deep affinity for the lush landscape around him and that which dwelled within it. After a five year residency self-teaching painting at Hodshill House just outside his hometown, Kai moved to London in 2020 where he has since established his professional practice.

KOHLSEN paintings are rooted in the lived experience, though subject matter can often play a secondary role in the painting act; “it’s not necessarily what is said, but how you say it.” Bold slashes of colour cover the canvas in a seemingly haphazard manner. Yet upon further absorption of the work and a little breathing space between you and the surface, an unmistakable glimmer of realism emerges. Initially noticed for painting on abandoned mattresses around London, and later feverishly producing hundreds of original paintings only to be scattered throughout the city, KOHLSEN recently debuted with an independent solo show in Oxford Circus to an audience of hundreds, making it quite clear he has no intention of following industry norms and fervently considers himself an 'outsider'.
